What Botox Is

Botox is a cosmetic injection created by Allergan, a pharmaceutical company. Botox is packaged in vials of either 50 or 100 units. Its usefulness and popularity have increased in a significant way over the course of many years. In 1987 two Vancouver doctors, Jean and Alastair Carruthers, discovered Botox by accident, not knowing how it would impact the world of cosmetics years later. Although there are many options and brands that offer the injection, Botox has become a household name in itself.

Botox is an injectable medication derived from botulinum toxin type A. Botox is directly injected into the muscle to help relax the treated area. Before Botox or other injectable options were unavailable, there were only invasive procedures, such as a facelift or other plastic surgery, to achieve facial rejuvenation. Botox was the first drug to use botulinum toxin to achieve results, and now it has helped many achieve their anti-aging goals. Thanks to cosmetic injectables like Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and other dermal filler options such as Sculptra, Restylane, Juvederm, and Juvederm Voluma, skin rejuvenation can for sure be achieved with every single treatment. While there are many locations for this service, Asha offers experience and precision, resulting in the best Botox results at her beautiful Sandy Springs Med Spa.

What Botox is Made of

Botox, the more popular injection brand name, is a toxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The bacteria that Botox is made from causes botulism. More specifically, the injectable drug made from botulinum toxin type A is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The botulinum toxin blocks the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which then causes the muscles to paralyze. This ability to “freeze” the muscle is why Botox has been popular and effective at treating wrinkle prevention.

How Does It Work?

Botox has become the trade name for Botulinum Toxin Type A, a purified toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In extremely small doses, Asha injects Botox directly into the specific muscles that cause the skin to wrinkle. These areas include but are not limited to crow’s feet, platysmal bands (around the neck), the forehead, frown lines, and more. These isolated muscles are considered frozen once the Botox is injected. Once injected, the area can no longer contract. Once Botulinum Toxin is injected into the desired area, it blocks certain nerves that make muscles contract. The muscle injected is relaxed, and the result is reduced wrinkles. Botox injections can last anywhere from three to six months, depending on the area injected, your day-to-day routine, and how deep your wrinkles may be.

A popular area that is treated with botox is the brow area. This helps individuals achieve a lift in the forehead resulting in a brow lift. Botox can be combined with other treatments, such as Juvederm, and Sculptra, to help restore the youthful features of your face in a natural-looking way. The procedure doesn’t take long, normally anywhere from 15-20 minutes, and you should notice full results in about a week or two.

Preventative Botox (Baby Botox)

To many people’s surprise, Botox is not just for those who have already visibly experienced the signs of aging and are trying to reverse it. It is suggested to start treatments early to help prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Especially if wrinkles are prevalent in your family line, this approach in the world of cosmetics is called Baby Botox, also known as Micro-Botox or Preventative Botox. The goal with Baby Botox is to add volume to your facial appearance. It smooths fine lines and wrinkles and prevents them, just like traditional Botox.

The only difference is that Baby Botox uses fewer products. The aim of Baby Botox is a smoother look without the “frozen” or nonrealistic expression, which can sometimes be the case with traditional Botox injections. Baby Botox also falls under the “less is more” approach Asha takes when administering Botox. The ideal candidate has healthy skin, no prior reaction to botulism toxin, and doesn’t have high blood pressure, hepatitis, or any other bleeding condition. Getting botox treatments as early as your 20s can be recommended if you hereditarily inherit sagging skin or premature lines and wrinkles. It is good to start early with Botox to prevent concerns that may be more difficult to keep up with as you age— but starting with a consultation is always best to see when and what you may need.

What to Avoid Before and After Your Appointment?

When it comes to Botox, there aren’t many things that need to be discontinued leading up to your appointment. But there are a few things you will need to avoid post-treatment. Below you will find both what not to do before and after your Botox Injections:

Before

  • Alcohol and Wine
  • NSAIDS – ibuprofen, aspirin, aleve, blood thinners

After

  • No exercising 24 hours after your treatment
  • No massaging of the area or surrounding areas
  • No facials directly following your Botox treatment
  • No yoga (more specifically, the downward dog pose) for 24 hours after your treatment
  • No sleeping on your face or the area Botox was received

Signs of Anti-Aging (What Areas You Can Receive Botox)

Areas in which Botox can be received in has expanded over the years. At the beginning of the Botox phenomenon, it was only approved to be injected into the glabella lines or furrows between the eyebrows. However, the need for Botox has grown, and so have the areas within the muscular facial structure that can be treated. Asha is well trained in injecting all facial areas and has many regular and returning clients at Pure Bliss Med Spa in Sandy Springs. Some areas commonly treated are:

  • Forehead lines or worry lines.
  • Glabella lines.
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes.
  • Necklines or Cords.
  • Lines around the mouth.
  • Pau d’orange of the chin.
  • Frown lines around the mouth
  • Brow lift
  • Botox Masseter Reduction for Facial Slimming

Botox treatments have expanded in other areas of the face and other areas of the body over the years. In the next section of this read, you will find that the indications have broadened completely and can treat more than just anti-aging concerns.

What Other Medical Conditions Does Botox Treat?

Botox injections are not limited to the cosmetic world and can benefit many in more ways than imagined. The Food and Drug Administration has approved it as a treatment for many other medical indications outside the most expected aging prevention. Those medical indications include:

  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain
  • Migraine Headaches:
  • Excessive Sweating or Hyperhidrosis
  • Depression
  • Overactive Bladder or Urinary Incontinence
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Blepharospasm
  • Cervical Dystonia
  • Strabismus
  • Contractures Pain from Cerebral Palsy (CP)

How Botox Delays Aging

Botox, also known as Botulinum Toxin, is a neuromodulator helping to freeze the muscles it is injected into. It does this by blocking the nerve signals responsible for our expressions. By doing so, Botox effectively reduces the ability to move in the area the botox was injected. Movement causes the skin to stretch, eventually resulting in wrinkled skin. Elastin is a key component in keeping the skin’s youthful appearance. It contributes to the skin’s suppleness. As we age, we lose elasticity, and facial expressions and movements begin to contribute to the loss of firmness of the skin. As we know, Botox diminishes the overall appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Therefore, treatments help to delay the visibility of aging. Rightfully so, botox is celebrated in the world of aesthetics due to the ease and speed of results.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox is completely safe to receive unless your healthcare provider has said otherwise specifically about you. There are no medical contraindications when it comes to the treatment. Although many clients are initially nervous about the procedure and the origin of botox, Botulinum toxin, Botox is FDA-approved and extremely safe. Now with every treatment, there do come possible side effects. That still does not take away from the injection’s safety. But possible side effects of Botox include but are not limited to:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising (where the botox was injected)
  • Pain (in the injected area)
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Dry eyes or excessive tearing
  • Drooping eyelid or ptosis
  • Double vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Allergic Reaction

These symptoms are rare and do not happen to everyone. It’s not very comforting trying something new. But at Pure Bliss Med Spa, we like to make you extremely comfortable and prepared.

How Long Does It Take to See the Results from Your Botox injections?

With every client’s results varying, the exact amount of time it takes for Botox to settle is not the same for all. Normally the full effects of the Botox injections are visible two weeks or less post-treatment. A client’s results also depend on if they are the perfect candidate for the treatment and the technique of the injector administering the injections. Botox’s results can last up to three to five months before needing a touch-up, depending on the client. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine and regular treatments recommended by your aesthetician is key to getting the best results from Botox. Asha advises what else may be needed to keep up your amazing results.

Other Treatments That Compliment Botox

As mentioned earlier, additional skin care treatments can help maintain the results from your Botox injections. This helps in a preventative and corrective way. A treatment like Microneedling or Laser Genesis is a great addition to your Botox plan to help boost your results and keep your skin supple, healthy, fine line, and wrinkle-free. Other great treatments to help correct concerns are our traditional facials, the hydrafacial, and chemical peels. Our Lead Atlanta Aesthetician, Nicolette, works alongside Asha to help you achieve your skincare and overall self-care goals.

Thanks to the plethora of injectable options such as Sculptra, Juvederm, and Restylane, we can provide clients with skin rejuvenation for every treatment. When you work with Asha, she always starts with a consultation, so you have the opportunity to express your specific concerns and personal cosmetic goals.
