A chemical peel is an acid-based topical solution applied to your skin. It causes a controlled injury that breaks down the bonds of the skin and strips the layers back, causing a deep exfoliation and rejuvenating your look.

She’ll look at your skin type, and its resilience, and apply a layer of acetone or alcohol to enhance absorption. The chemical compound is then applied to your skin in layers, with pauses in between to assess your skin’s response and limit irritability. You may feel minor, temporary discomfort such as tingling, as the chemical peel is applied, but this will quickly reside. Depending on the chemical peel used, either self-neutralizing or a neutralizing solution may also be applied. Your aesthetician will end your treatment by applying sunblock and giving you home care instructions.

Over the next few days, you may or may not experience shedding of the skin. The skin may become tight, it may appear darker, and within 2-3 days it make start flaking or peeling. It’s really important not to prematurely peel the skin, because this can cause tears and may result in permanent scarring. Instead, leave the skin to shed naturally and slowly expose the refreshed and youthful new skin below.

Depending on the strength and percentage of the chemical solution, we advise clients to receive a chemical peel every 4-6 weeks to address your initial concerns. For some lighter peels, or peels geared towards alleviating acne, we encourage clients to start a regimen of chemical peels every 2 weeks until we obtain clear skin.

What is the recovery time for a chemical peel?

The recovery time depends on the type of chemical peel used, the strength of the solution, and the resiliency of your skin. Most light peels will not have any downtime, while medium to strong peels may require up to a week of downtime. It is important to protect your skin with sunblock that has a high SPF in the weeks weeks following the chemical peel.

The changes in your skin after a chemical peel is dependent on the type of chemical peel used and the resiliency of your skin. Superficial chemical peels will have more subtle results such as softer brighter skin but may take a series of treatments to correct pigmentation and skin texture. Medium depth peels are more aggressive and penetrate deeper than the superficial layer. These deeper peels will show more improvement in discoloration, scarring, fine lines etc. These deeper peels will have more downtime and may also require a series of treatments for optimal results.

Will you always peel after a chemical peel?
