It’s officially Fall! The leaves are finally changing and that means the season for pumpkin patches, apple pies, and all things spooky starts. But let’s not let the fun stop there, it’s also the perfect season for Chemical Peels. That’s right, as the weather starts to get cooler this is the best time to start your chemical peel journey.

What is a chemical peel and what does it do?

If this is your first time thinking about getting a chemical peel, you’re probably wondering what is the process and what does chemical peels do? Chemical peels are exactly what they sound like, it’s a treatment where a chemical solution is applied to the skin essentially damaging that superficial layer of the skin to cause it to start peeling off, revealing newer healthier skin. The skin regenerates after the peel and heals skins imperfections. Chemical peels are composed of various solutions like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, trichloroacetic, or lactic acid. It deeply exfoliates your skin leaving you with a rejuvenated and brighter complexion.

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

Chemical Peels are a great option for a wide range of skin types and skin conditions. If you have mild to moderate skin imperfections and would like to start with a non-invasive treatment to improve your skin’s appearance then this treatment is an ideal choice. Chemical Peels can be done on the face, neck, and body. They can be used to treat aging skin, dark spots and hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture irregularities, mild scarring, acne and enlarged pores.

Generally Chemical peels are not effective for clients looking to treat deep wrinkles or scars, sagging skin or skin laxity. Chemical Peels aren’t effective in tightening or lifting the skin. There may be other procedures to consider such as dermal filler, botox, or a facelift.

Chemical Peels are generally safer on fair-skinned clients but can be just as effective on darker complexions when used conservatively by a skilled practitioner. Chemical Peels range from superficial to deep peels and the right peel will be chosen for your specific skin type.

How do I prepare for my Chemical Peel?

It is recommended to stop exfoliating about a week before your appointment. This means no retinol, retinoid, exfoliating scrubs, or at home peels. Exfoliating products can impact how your skin tolerates the chemical peel. No tanning beds, waxing, or facials at least 2 weeks before your treatment. You also want to be prepared to avoid long sun exposure for 10 days before and after your peel. Be sure to have a good moisturizer with at least 40 SPF.

What should I expect after my Chemical Peel? What rules should I follow?

Right after your chemical peel you may feel tightness and be a bit red. This is completely normal. Your skin is going to feel dry and tight for the next 7-10 days, so make sure you are using a water based moisturizer at night and a good SPF during the day. You should also expect there to be peeling or light flaking of the skin starting on the second or third day. If you do have peeling DO NOT pick at the skin, or prematurely peel the skin. Allow the skin to peel naturally on its own. Make sure you are avoiding direct sun exposure and excessive heat. This includes no working out for 1 week and no tanning beds for 2 weeks. Avoid exfoliating products for a minimum of 7 days and avoid all retinol and retinoids for 10 days post peel.

What if you don’t peel after your chemical peel?

Having little to no peeling after a peel is completely normal. Everyone’s skin type is different and will react differently. Skin can be resilient and although it is not visibly shedding, the peel will help the skin to naturally break down. Just because you didn’t peel doesn’t mean it didn’t rejuvenate your skin and diminish imperfections.

Chemical Peels are recommended for skin imperfections as well as overall maintain ace. A seasonal peel will stimulate the skin so it looks and performs better year round. Depending on the strength of the chemical peel you have done, the time in between peels can be 2-4 weeks.
