Vampire facials, plasma facials, blood facials, the list goes on. There are many names for platelet-rich plasma injections, but what is this service exactly and what does it do for your skin?

A plasma facial is a medical non-surgical procedure where plasma is separated from your body’s own blood and then injected or infused back into the skin for skin rejuvenation. Platelet-rich plasma has a higher concentration of platelets than what is typically found in the blood, which means it’s richer in growth factors, and can make a big difference to the way your skin looks and feels.

Platelet-rich plasma has been used for years as a form of regenerative medicine in wound-healing and for orthopedic injuries, as well as treatments involving hair loss. It’s flown under the radar in skincare, but now the secret is out! Platelet-rich plasma has many benefits, including creating a youthful appearance.

During the procedure, our nurse practitioner with draw a sample of blood. The blood is then spun in a medical device called a centrifuge, which separates the blood into layers and extracts the layer of protein-rich plasma with a high concentration of platelets, creating what is known as platelet-rich plasma.

Once the platelet-rich plasma is isolated from the whole blood, it’s infused back into the skin. Our clinicians will infuse the plasma into the dermal layers of the skin while performing micro-needling. The small microscopic punctures of micro-needling create channels for deeper absorption of the plasma.

The combination of platelet-rich plasma and the micro-needling procedure helps stimulate collagen production in your skin. The platelet-rich plasma can also be injected into the skin using a very small gauge needle, injections are mainly focused on problem areas and areas of volume loss.

One benefit of using platelet-rich plasma is the down-time is accelerated by its healing properties. The micro-needling or needle injections typically causes some redness for 24-48 hours. In the event of a small bruise due to the needle, healing may extend to one week.

What is the after care of a vampire facial?

The most important step in after care is keeping the face clean for 24 hours to avoid causing an infection after getting injections. You should use a gentle cleanser and make sure that you are wearing SPF during the day. Using a hyaluronic acid serum can help with keeping your skin hydrated and plump, however, you should avoid products with acids, enzymes, or harsh ingredients for a few days post procedure.
