Want Lip Fillers? Here’s What You Need to Know

Lip augmentations, using dermal fillers, have become one of the most popular cosmetic requests we receive across a wide range of age groups. A procedure that was once secretive is now a staple in beauty enhancement.

While people may have different preferences on their actual lip size, the average women is always looking for plump and youthful lips while maintaining a natural appearance. Many millennials are striving to achieve bigger lips as seen on Instagram. The middle age population is striving to maintain volume. And contrary to popular belief, more men are trying dermal fillers and lip injections to focus more on their facial structure.

What kind of injectables are used for the lips?

The most common fillers used for lip augmentations are from Juvéderm and Restylane. Juvéderm has specific fillers called Volbella and Juvéderm Ultra, which are specifically designed for use in the lips. Restylane, meanwhile, has a lip enhancement product called Restylane Kysee. Both of these lines of fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance produced by our bodies. Hyaluronic acid fillers help retain moisture in the skin, which increases the volume and shape of the lips for a plumper appearance. They also have a small amount of lidocaine to help make the injections more comfortable.

How long do lip fillers last?

Generally, lip fillers last 6-12 months. Results vary from person to person, due to your body’s natural metabolism. Your lip profile also plays a factor in how your body will retain fillers.

Is there any down time?

There is no required down time. However, there is a possibility of some swelling and bruising which could last a few days or possibly a week to subside. You can help prevent bruising by taking daily Arnica tablets three days before your appointment and applying Arnica gel periodically after your treatment

Is the procedure painless?

The procedure is overall tolerable and to some it is painless. We provide a topical numbing cream to help the procedure be as comfortable as possible. By anesthetizing the area, we expect there to be minimal to no discomfort. 

How often should I come in for touchups?

We recommend coming in every 6-9 months to get a touch up syringe and maintain the volume of your lips and to prevent them from returning to their original size.

Are lip injections safe?

Yes! All Juvéderm and Restylane products are FDA approved and are very well studied. There has been few reports of complications or adverse effects from lip injections. At Pure Bliss Med Spa we only use fillers comprised of hyaluronic acid, which naturally goes away over time and can be dissolved if needed. Talk to your clinician about this at your appointment.

Can I work-out after I get my lip fillers?

You should refrain from exercise for at least three days after getting injectables. Strenuous activity can cause bruising and swelling to worsen and make it harder to heal.

How will my lips feel after getting lip fillers?

Once the swelling goes down, your lips will feel very soft and natural. Your body will generate more collagen as well, to give a natural plumping appearance.

How many syringes of filler can I get in my lips?

The average client starts with one syringe and may add on more after four weeks. The final number of syringes will depend on what look you are trying to achieve, as well as the size of your natural lips. It can be really helpful if you bring pictures of your lip goals to your consultation. That will help your clinician give you the best advice possible.
