What is Laser Genesis?

Laser Genesis is known to be a non-invasive laser facial that uses dermal heating to restore the skin’s overall complexion. It does this by breaking down melanin to lighten hyperpigmentation and balance sebum production to brighten the skin’s overall tone. The Laser Genesis treatment also helps with smoothening texture and reducing fine lines, wrinkles, scars, enlarged pores, active acne, and increases the speed of cell turn over. This heat-based laser stimulates the body’s natural healing process to boost collagen production and elastin resulting in more supple skin. Laser Genesis leaves our clients with an even skin tone, smooth texture, and a youthful glow everyone desires.

How Does Laser Genesis Work?

So now that it is understood what Laser Genesis is, let’s dig a little deeper into how it works. Laser Genesis is a non-ablative Nd: YAG 1064nm laser that is used primarily on the face and neck to treat the dermis – the middle layer of the skin. The Dermis is the thickest layer of the skin between the epidermis and subcutaneous layer. It has connective tissue, blood vessels, oil and sweat glands, nerves, hair follicles, and other structures making it one of the most important layers, and hardest to treat.

In simpler terms, Laser Genesis does not wound the epidermis to treat the dermis. Instead, it works by penetrating the top layer of skin through heat absorption and delivering thousands of micro-pulses of energy into the dermis. These micro-pulses heat up the dermis, and the warming action shrinks blood vessels, breaks down scar tissue and stimulates collagen production. Laser Genesis leaves your skin free of scars, broken blood vessels and redness, with the added benefit of naturally increased collagen production.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Laser Genesis?

Laser Genesis is gentle enough for all skin types and tones. If you’re pregnant or nursing, avoid all laser treatments for it is a contraindication. Additionally, if you have any irritation in the preferred area of treatment, such as a wound, cut, or rash, hold off on any laser treatments until you’re completely healed. Essentially, the best candidates for Laser Genesis are those who may be suffering from active breakouts, post inflammatory erythema, stubborn hyperpigmentation, and individuals who are looking to tighten their skin or smoothen their texture.

It is known that some lasers can cause problems if you’ve used aggressive acne treatments such as isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past 12 months. But Laser Genesis works a little differently than other laser treatments for the face, neck and décolleté. Since Laser Genesis aids the skin in reducing redness, it has been found that some practices encourage Laser Genesis every two weeks, if on Accutane, along with soothing facials, to help control redness and sensitivity.

Because Laser Genesis is a gentler laser than most laser treatments it pairs really well with other services that help to combat acne and other concerns. Our favorite is the Hydrafacial or Hydrafacial Deluxe. This combination decreases acne and improves redness quicker than if it were done by itself, which helps clients reach their skin goals sooner.

How Do You Prepare for Laser Genesis Treatment?

Although Laser Genesis may be gentle, there are still important recommendations to adhere to leading up to your appointment. We advise all client to follow these steps to prepare the skin before a Laser Genesis treatment:

  • Two weeks before your treatment, stop tanning or avoid sun exposure, to lower your risk of post-inflammatory erythema or hyperpigmentation.
  • One week ahead of time, stop using any acids on the skin such as alpha and beta hydroxy acid or retinol skin care products.
  • If you have hair growth in the treatment area (this includes any belly’s hair- which is why dermaplaning is another great treatment to pair with the Laser Genesis) shave or dermaplane it 24 hours before your appointment. Waxing and/or using a depilatory is not recommended because of the possibility of irritation.
  • Because a laser procedure can trigger cold sores or a herpes outbreak, talk to your doctor about antiviral medication that you can take before your session. Be sure to take at lesser a week prior to your appointment or speak with your provider about the particular medications necessary to work.
  • Arrive at your appointment with clean, dry skin that is product, hair, and makeup free.

What Happens During Laser Genesis Treatment?

The procedure starts with a skin analysis by your aesthetician/laser technician to see if there is any need for a thorough skin cleansing to remove residual makeup, oil, and/or dirt. If not, your skin will be wiped down by an antiseptic wipe to insure it is prepped and ready for treatment. Following the cleanse, your eyes will be covered with protective eyewear, as will the technicians, then the procedure will begin.

Topical numbing agents are usually unnecessary and not advised for Laser Genesis treatment because it is painless. Also, it affects the blood vessels, so you may not get as much of a redness-reducing benefit, if that is what you are wanting to treat, from Laser Genesis if you apply it beforehand.

As the laser’s hand piece glides over the skin, you’ll feel light warmth and a tingling sensation. Most clients describe it as if warm water is being gently sprayed on their skin. And because of the warming sensation you receive it’s a great treatment for the winter season.

After the treatment, your technician may apply a hydrating serum like hyaluronic acid a. Lastly, sunscreen will be applied for protection. Being that your skin will be more sensitized to the sun for two weeks following your treatment it is very important to pay attention to your sun exposure and wear your SPF.

What Results Can I Expect?

Clients have stated they see an increased radiance to their skin right away. As more treatments are performed within the recommended time frame by your laser technician, the more your skin’s texture becomes smoother while hyperpigmentation and blemishes diminish. Increased circulation to your tissues will improve the condition of your newly remodeled skin cells, which helps even your tone, rejuvenate your skin’s appearance, and give you a more youthful look.

Laser Genesis has zero recovery or downtime, so you are good to return to normal activity, including wearing makeup. 6-8 treatments are recommended to see lasting results, depending on what your focus is. But it is always important to ask your provider.

When Will You See Laser Genesis Results?

You should start to notice improvements in your skin after the first treatment, but typically by the 4th treatment there is a visible difference. 6-8 treatment sessions (spaced about two to four weeks apart) is recommended. The effects are cumulative. It’s like a workout for the skin—something you have to do consistently over time in order to see substantial differences. It has been shown to slow down the aging process and reverse signs of aging.

What Is the Difference Between Laser Genesis and IPL?

Intense pulsed light (IPL), also known as a photofacial, is a light-based treatment that uses intensive visible light to correct skin conditions like brown spots, sunspots, age spots and facial redness. Most people require a series of IPL treatments, spaced four to 8 weeks apart, depending on your skin’s sensitivity. You can expect 5-7 days of downtime due to flaking.

Because the light therapy targets pigment, it’s not ideal for people with olive or brown skin. IPL on skin of color can cause risks of burning, scarring, and discoloration. Laser Genesis, on the other hand, is a viable option for all skin tones and types.

For optimal results Laser Genesis is often combined with other procedures, on the same day as facials, chemical peels, dermaplaning, radiofrequency (RF) skin-tightening treatments, microneedling, or dermal filler treatments. Always be sure to voice your concerns to your skincare professional for the best advice and guidance.
