What is Sculptra?

It is natural for your butt to lose its plumpness over time due to life-changing events such as weight loss, aging, and pregnancy. If one of these three things has affected your shape and it’s something you’ve become concerned about, you might be interested in Sculptra — an injection to help improve facial volume and to volumize the buttocks.

A Sculptra aesthetic injection is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment that can help bring back volume to an area you may have lost it. Because Sculptra is a collagen stimulator it does have a thicker consistency than most dermal filler products. And it has been used by healthcare providers to enhance different areas of the body, such as with facial aging and deep facial wrinkles. But it’s recently gained lots of popularity for volumizing the butt.

How Does Sculptra Work?

Sculptra injections work slightly differently than the traditional injections on the market. The majority of dermal fillers add volume to an area because of its key ingredient, hyaluronic acid. But Sculptra’s special ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid, stimulates collagen production once it is injected into the dermal layer of the skin.

Collagen is known as a youthful protein, but the body’s collagen production decreases over time. Thus, collagen is what is responsible for helping your skin maintain its shape and remain structured.

Sculptra injections help to add more shape to the desired area, which results in a natural look because your injector uses a curved shape technique. And the injected amount will be determined by your body type so it isn’t noticeable.

It’s also good to note that the process of collagen stimulation is not one that happens overnight after initial treatment. As such, it can take anywhere from weeks to months depending on the person. So multiple Sculptra treatment sessions are recommended to properly build collagen in the injected area and to achieve your desired shape.

Additionally, although Sculptra injections are not yet FDA-approved to use on the buttocks area, many healthcare providers have administered the injections and seen great results. This would be considered an off-label use when receiving Sculptra for the butt, but many clients leave satisfied with their results.

Who is the Best Fit for Aesthetic Sculptra Treatment?

During your initial consultation at our practice, our nurse practitioner analyzes your needs and goals to see if Sculptra is the best treatment for you. Generally, this type of treatment is going to be the most beneficial for those with healthy immune systems looking to add volume back into an area it may have lost volume.

For example, Sculptra is great for the buttocks or the nasolabial folds. It’s also ideal for those looking to restore facial volume, smooth out the skin around the chin and nose (smile lines), or for other facial features. But you’re indeed a great candidate for Sculptra if you have:

  • Sunken cheeks and temples
  • Fine lines and chin wrinkles
  • Slack chin
  • Loose jawline skin
  • Chest wrinkles and folds

Where Can Sculptra Be Injected?

This type of injectable can be beneficial to multiple locations of the body where there is lost collagen. Sculptra has also been known to help correct hollows of the temples, adding volume to the cheeks, as well as the marionette lines and nasolabial folds that are deeper than desired. Its main goal, as an injectable, is to not only add volume but stimulate collagen production, which is why it’s a great option.

Now although Sculptra is FDA approved for the face, it has gained more popularity for volumizing and shaping the butt. And this is the most common area Sculptra injections are requested for. However, if you do have other areas of concern, our nurse practitioner can let you know if this type of treatment may be beneficial to those areas.

Sculptra Aesthetic Procedure

Once you arrive, consent forms will need to be filled out to ensure you understand the procedure before your appointment begins. Next, you will be taken into the room where the procedure takes place. You will be asked to lay on your stomach in a comfortable position. Then, your service provider will wipe down the area where you will be injected with alcohol to sterilize it — and to lower any possibilities for infection.

Depending on time as well as what your injector may recommend, a topical anesthetic may be applied to the area that will be injected to reduce any discomfort that may be felt during the procedure. There is also the option for a local anesthetic into the deep dermis as well. The injection process will only take 15 to 30 minutes depending on how much is needed to achieve your desired results. This will be discussed and decided upon prior to your injection process beginning.

After your treatment is finished, your injector will clean the area that was injected and make sure that it is bandaged to stop any bleeding. You are able to get dressed and check out after. And driving is also permitted as long as your provider did not administer any anesthetics that put you to sleep.

Expectations After The Procedure

After the Sculptra injections, you may continue your daily activities. Icing the injected area is also recommended to reduce any swelling as well as massaging the area multiple times a day for two weeks. This will help to ensure that the solution is evenly dispersed in order to reduce the risk of any lumps from the Sculptra solution gathering in one area.

Please note that if you anticipate your normal shape returning immediately and it hasn’t, this does not mean that the treatment didn’t work. The Sculptra injections take a few weeks to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production process, which is responsible for your results.

Swelling, tenderness, and bruising can also be expected so you’ll want to give this time to naturally subside. But if you do have any concerns, scheduling a follow-up appointment with your injector is recommended to make sure the treatment was effective.

After Care After Sculptra Aesthetic Injections

Most people are able to resume everyday activities and there is no significant downtime necessary. Redness, pin prick marks, slight tenderness, and swelling are the most noticeable directly following sculpture injections. But this does subside anywhere from five to seven days post-procedure.

We’re also happy to say that we always experience pleased clients after sculpture injections who are in love with their results. But following the recommended aftercare once you have received Sculptra injections is very important.

These recommendations include but are not limited to:

  • Massaging the injected area to ensure that it is evenly dispersed
  • Washing your hands thoroughly before massaging the injected area
  • Avoid alcohol consumption up to a week post-treatment
  • Avoid vigorous exercise for two weeks post-treatment
  • Avoid sunbathing or tanning up to a week post-treatment
  • No make-up on the treated area for 48 hours (to avoid the risk of infection)
  • Avoid aspirin and NSAIDs for 12-48 hours after your fist treatment

Are There Any Side Effects?

There are minimal side effects that can happen to individuals who receive Sculptra injections which can be considered uncommon. But if you do experience any side effects, the most common are:

  • Bruising, redness, or skin discoloration at the injection sites
  • Lumps, bumps, or keloid formation (which typically subside)
  • Bleeding from the Sculptra injection
  • Acne where Sculptra was injected
  • Itching or rash
  • Uneven results

There are very rare instances where severe side effects can happen. It is best to contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling Dizzy
  • Drainage at the injection site
