What Are PDO Threads?

Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are medical grade threads made of a synthetic fiber. PDO threads come as barb threads and smooth threads. Bard threads latch to the underlying tissue and reposition it by lift sagging or loose tissue. A PDO thread lift procedure is a treatment which uses the absorbable barb thread sutures to tighten and lift the skin holding it in place.

PDO threads help rejuvenate areas of the face and body without surgery, does not require sedation, and has minimal downtime. Smooth threads are another form of PDO threads that do not have a barb design. These small threads are smooth and placed under the skin to build collagen in that area. This improves skin integrity and gives volume to the area treated. Both smooth threads and barb threads stimulate natural collagen in the areas they are inserted.

They provide several benefits including:

  • Instantly lift and tightens skin
  • Builds lasting collagen known as neocollagenesis and adds volume.
  • Improves skin texture and wrinkles in areas of the face and body by cellular renewal

What Is the Procedure for PDO Threads?

On the day of your procedure, your provider will conduct a full consultation and discuss the treatment, potential complications, alternative treatment options, as well as give you advice about your recovery. The area being treated will then be numbed and disinfected. Once you are fully aestheticized, a tiny entry point will be made using a needle and the threads will be injected using a blunt tip cannula. The threads will then be cut, tied off, and secured under the skin. The incision area will heal and be unnoticeable in just a few short days. There is no post op or recovery time needed at the clinic, so you would be able to go home shortly after the procedure.

What To Expect

PDO Threads recovery time is minimal. Some swelling and bruising is expected within the first 24 to 48 hours after the procedure but you are able to continue most of your regularly scheduled activities. Things you will want to avoid 1-2 weeks directly after your procedure include:

  • pursing your lips
  • any form of smoking
  • drinking through a straw (for the first several weeks)
  • anything that can cause sweating (i.e.. intense exercise and saunas)
  • sleeping on your side

We suggest sleeping with your head propped on a to avoid accidentally rolling onto your face during the middle of the night.
