How to Prevent Pain During Botox® Injections
With any type of injection, it’s reasonable to expect just a little discomfort. But you don’t need to accept pain during Botox® injections. Find out how to prevent or minimize pain during treatment.

Individualized Botox® injections can minimize wrinkles and lines on your face, ultimately lending to a more youthful appearance. Getting Botox can surely enhance your self-confidence, but the idea of pain from the injections might dissuade you from giving Botox a try.

At Pure Bliss Medspa in Sandy Springs, Georgia, your comfort is a top priority. Experienced facial injector Asha Hill, NP, makes sure your skin is numb before placing the wrinkle-reducing injections.

Asha reduces pain during the Botox procedure in other ways. She might encourage you to take steps ahead of your appointment to ensure your injections are minimally uncomfortable. Here’s everything you should know about pain prevention for Botox:

Smaller needles for less discomfort

Most people don’t feel significant pain during Botox treatment, thanks in part to the size of the needle Asha uses for the injections. A finer needle causes less trauma to the skin and won’t cause as much discomfort as a thicker needle.

Smaller needles are also significantly less likely to cause bruising and bleeding under the skin. Additionally, you shouldn’t feel any lingering discomfort after your injections.

How numbing cream prevents pain

Topical anesthesia is also available to give you a more comfortable Botox injection experience. Asha applies the numbing cream to your skin shortly before administering the injections, allowing some time for your skin to become numb as the product fuses into it.

Lidocaine gel or cream isn’t a necessary part of the Botox procedure, but it can make a difference in terms of comfort. It may be especially helpful if you know you’re getting Botox in an area of sensitive skin, like around your mouth or near your eyes.

Pain prevention alternatives

Numbing cream isn’t the only option for pain prevention during a Botox procedure. If you’re not interested in numbing cream or if you can’t safely use it for any reason, Asha can numb your skin before the procedure with ice.

Gently massaging your skin before the injection can also help prevent pain. This is called vibration anesthesia, and it’s proven to reduce discomfort during Botox injections. Unlike with numbing cream, you don’t have to wait 30 minutes or so for ice or vibration to prepare your skin.

Steps you can take ahead of your visit

You can take steps to prepare for a smooth Botox injection appointment. The most important step is booking a consultation with Asha to talk about your goals, concerns, and whether or not you’re a good candidate for the treatment.

Asha will ask about the medications and supplements you take during your Botox consultation. If you take any medications that thin your blood, she’ll advise you to stop taking them for several days before the treatment. This helps prevent bruising and bleeding from the needles.
