What to Expect From Your First Lip Filler Treatment

Trying anything for the first time is less intimidating when you have some idea of what to expect, and getting lip fillers is no exception. This article will walk you through the steps of getting lip fillers, how to prepare, and what the recovery looks like.

How to prepare

Before you get fillers, you should come in for a personalized treatment consultation and planning appointment at Pure Bliss Medspa. Asha measures your facial proportions, reviews your medical history, and helps you decide if fillers are the best fit for your goals.

You should describe what you want your lips to look like so that Asha can plan your treatment accordingly. Keep in mind that not everyone has the same face shape or lip shape, so your results may look different from someone else who got a similar amount of lip filler.

When coming in for your treatment, be sure to arrive with bare lips. Asha might tell you to stop taking specific medications before your treatment, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), because they increase bleeding.

During your appointment

Your treatment starts with numbing your lips to prepare them for lip filler injections. In most cases, Asha uses topical numbing products like lidocaine to do this. It takes 15-30 minutes for your lips to become numb and ready for injection. 

Asha uses a very fine needle for all lip injections at Pure Bliss Medspa. Even with numb lips, a smaller needle means less of a pinch during the injection. You can expect your eyes to water even if you don’t feel much discomfort or pinching.

As she injects filler into your lips, Asha might apply ice between injections to reduce swelling and bruising around your mouth. You can expect the entire process to take just 30 minutes or so. Then, Asha monitors you for another 15 minutes before you can leave the office. 

What to expect during lip filler recovery

It can take up to a week for the swelling to go down after you get lip injections, but it may take as little as 24-48 hours. Every person is different, so your recovery might not look exactly like someone else’s. As your lips heal from lip filler injections, be sure to:

• Drink lots of water
• Apply an occasional ice pack to reduce swelling
• Avoid excessive lip movements and puckering until the filler has settled
• Avoid lip products like lip gloss, lipstick, and lip balm for at least 24 hours
• Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours

Asha will help you book a follow-up appointment about two weeks after your initial lip filler treatment. 

During your follow-up visit, Asha examines your lips and might take pictures for your medical record. Let her know if you experience any side effects before then, including excessive bleeding or signs of an infection.
